Podcasts | Should you Create One Now?

Spoiler: not everyone has their own podcast yet

Unrelatedly, I now wait for all episodes of a show to be released before watching the first episode of a new season. I'm doing this with Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Spotify recently released a redesign of its mobile app, emphasizing discovery and full-screen vertical scrolling. In addition to showing albums and artists you might be interested in, the home feed now also includes previews of podcast episodes that automatically play with the sound on. I started my podcast in August 2022 and thought everyone already had one.

This is of course not accurate. When we become interested in something, like podcasts, we tend to hyperfocus on it and start seeing only podcasts and podcasters everywhere. There are over 5 million podcast titles on Spotify, and there are 1.8 billion millennials worldwide. See, not every millennial has a podcast.

Many who have thought about starting their own podcast, even for a moment, ultimately don't follow through. Often thinking they're not interesting enough. If you find yourself feeling this way, block the thought immediately. Record yourself for one minute on your phone talking about something you value, and listen back to it. You'll notice right away your impressive knowledge and high energy that listeners would find compelling and entertaining.

Creating a brand around your name and personality is an enjoyable ride, whether you own a company or not. Podcasts are not reserved just for founders or executives.

YouTube is now focusing more on podcasts and just added podcast analytics.

🎙️ Start your own podcast

  1. Create a profile on Spotify for Podcasters to distribute your podcast on Spotify, Apple, and many other audio platforms.

  2. Land on a topic you value and that has an audience.

  3. Write the description for the show, and episode 1.

  4. Interview your best friend or first-ever client for the first episode.

  5. Press record, edit your first episode, drop the audio into Adobe Podcast to give it the studio sound quality, and download it.

  6. Design your show and episode 1 cover art through Canva.

  7. Promote your podcast on social media and put some ad spend behind it to reach a larger audience.

  8. Drop a new episode every week or two to build and retain your audience.
